Once the sun has set, my guards come to escort me to the cellar. They walk on either side of me, not the least bit worried about me running away or fighting them. The guns they wear on their belt might have something to do with that.
As we're walking through the front yard, past the entrance, the tallest man stops me with a hand on my shoulder. I whip my head around, scared I've done something wrong.
“Change of plans,” he says before tilting his head toward the door.
“What?”
“Go inside,” he instructs.
I hesitate only long enough for his partner to jab two fingers in between my shoulder blades and push me forward.
I stumble but right myself, glaring over my shoulder. “Alright! I'm going.”
I cringe with every step I take. My guards are right behind me as always, making sure I do what's expected of me.
The shorter, and nicer of the two, steps forward and opens the door for me. I try my hardest not to roll my eyes at the chivalrous act because it definitely doesn't belong here. But maybe he's like me and Jameson. Maybe he doesn't belong here.
As soon as we're inside, we take an immediate left, into the room I've come to hate. The room where I first laid eyes on Joan and on Jameson. I can't even come to connect that Jameson with the Jameson I know today. They're two completely different men. He's softer now, more alive; tame, in a way. Well, at least he used to be.
Joan has her eyes locked on a sheet of paper as we enter the room. She doesn't bother looking up when I take a seat before her. There's something different about her eyes. They're still cold and unfeeling as always, but now something about them look strained. She looks worried. Worried and exhausted.
“Seems you've been doing a good job. That's more than a little surprising,” she says.
I ignore her backhanded compliment. “I want to see Jameson.”
Just as I've ignored her, she chooses to ignore me. “Initially, I thought Robert was the best fit for you,” she says, turning to glare at the dark haired man by her side. He looks away.
Pansy...
“But now I see that I was wrong. That's not a good fit at all. A pushover and a troublemaker is a toxic combination.”
Joan calling Robert a pushover takes me by surprise, considering his main job is to make sure that the 'unruly women' are taken care of.
“So, you'll be put with Tarin. Bring him in, please.”
I open my mouth to argue, to fight, or to ask why in the hell she's decided to move me from the dusty prison and let me back in the house, but one cold look from Joan and I bite my tongue. I know that if given the chance, she'd shoot me and have my head delivered to Jameson. I can't do that to him. But there's no way I'm doing this again. I'd rather stay in the cellar.
I wonder why she's even letting me back in.
